Our Environment ....At Weka, the environment is the third teacher — a living, breathing space that honours the mana, curiosity, and uniqueness of every child. Our learning spaces are thoughtfully crafted to reflect real life, nature, and the rhythms of tamariki. Children choose when to eat, where to explore, when to seek quiet, and how they want to engage, supporting their autonomy and wellbeing.
Guided by Te Whāriki and Reggio-inspired principles, we create environments that nurture wonder, playfulness, deep thinking, and meaningful connections to te taiao. Natural and up-cycled materials encourage tamariki to experiment, transform ideas, and express their creativity in ways that are open-ended and authentic. Our commitment is to provide spaces that are calm, beautiful, intentional, and responsive — places where children feel a strong sense of belonging, joy, and possibility. |
Our DesignAt Weka, our four age-appropriate lounges — inside and out — are purposefully designed to honour the developmental stages, autonomy, and wellbeing of every child. By providing environments where tamariki are not overshadowed by older peers, we create spaces that nurture confidence, calmness, and the freedom to learn at their own natural rhythm.
Daily indoor–outdoor flow reflects our commitment to te taiao and real-world, exploratory learning. Children can choose where they feel most engaged, move between spaces with ease, and experience the outdoors in all seasons. Guided by the belief that “there is no bad weather, only bad clothing”, we empower tamariki to connect with nature, develop resilience, and discover the world around them through meaningful, hands-on experiences. |
Our CommunityAt Weka, te taiao is a living teacher — offering our tamariki endless possibilities for exploration, awe, and relationship-building. Through intentional experiences, children learn what it means to be kaitiaki (guardians) of the earth, developing a deep respect for the natural world and understanding the impact of their actions on the people, places, and living creatures around them.
We proudly embrace the richness of our wider community. Each week, three of our learning lounges venture into nearby reserves, strengthening children’s connection to place and nurturing their sense of belonging. Our regular visits to local businesses, schools, and community events further support tamariki to see themselves as valued, capable contributors within the Winton community and beyond. |
