Weka's Philosophy

Our Purpose - Nurturing the Future
At Weka, we believe children are the future leaders of our world. It is our collective responsibility to equip tamariki with the life skills, resilience, and confidence to embrace their hāpai—life journey—with curiosity, strength, and joy. Within a warm, home-like environment, we honour the unique mana of every child. Each tamaiti is recognised, celebrated, and nurtured as an individual with their own strengths, interests, and identity.
Relationships  - Whanaungatanga and Partnership
Our philosophy is grounded in whanaungatanga—building strong, respectful relationships through our primary caregiving approach. We work in close partnership with whānau to ensure each child experiences a deep sense of belonging (tūrangawaewae) and emotional security.  Through these trusted connections, tamariki and whānau feel seen, valued, and supported as essential members of our learning community.
Learning Through Wonder - Ako and Manaakitanga
Our kaiako are responsive, intentional, and co-constructive in their approach. We design provocations and learning experiences that spark inquiry, creativity, and exploration—nurturing a love of learning that evolves naturally through play.  Through manaakitanga—care and guidance—we uplift the knowledge and aspirations of tamariki and their whānau. Learning is a shared journey (ako) where all voices are respected and celebrated.
Connection to Nature – Te Taiao and Papatuanuku
We are deeply connected to Te Taiao (the natural world), and our curriculum invites tamariki to explore, discover, and learn from the land. Papatuanuku is our teacher, and her rhythms, beauty, and gifts shape our daily experiences.  Our outdoor and indoor environments are thoughtfully curated as the third teacher, rich in natural materials, beauty, and sensory inspiration. This connection encourages deep engagement, imagination, and respect for the living world.
Holistic Development – Mana Aotūroa and Movement
We honour the natural unfolding of development through unhurried, respectful practices. We follow the philosophy of Mana Aotūroa—“In my own time, when my muscles and brain are ready”—celebrating each child’s growing confidence in their body and abilities.  Tamariki are empowered as active participants in their own learning journey, with time and space to move, explore, and lead.
Our Commitment to Te Tiriti o Waitangi
We honour the unique status of tangata whenua and are committed to upholding the principles of Te Tiriti o Waitangi: Partnership, Protection, and Participation. Māori perspectives are not an addition to our curriculum—they are foundational to our practice, decision-making, and vision.  Culture, language, and identity are woven into daily life at Weka, where diversity is embraced and celebrated with authenticity and aroha.
Our Vision
Guided by aroha, whakapapa, and a deep connection to nature, we walk alongside tamariki and their whānau as they grow into confident, connected kaitiaki of our future—nurtured in identity, rooted in belonging, and inspired to wonder.
