Pukeko Lounge

Pukeko Lounge is a welcoming space for our 3–4-year-old tamariki — a place built on trust, partnership, and belonging. With four kaiako supporting the lounge and a purposeful ratio of 1:7, children receive the encouragement and guidance they need to explore, wonder, and follow their developing interests.
Co-construction sits at the heart of Pukeko Lounge. Here, kaiako and tamariki learn together — sharing ideas, asking questions, and building knowledge side by side. This collaborative approach nurtures confident thinkers, strengthens relationships, and supports each child to grow into a capable, curious, and joyful learner

Responsive & Intentional Environment

At Weka, our environment is thoughtfully crafted to spark curiosity, wonder, and meaningful learning. Every space and material is selected with intention, enabling kaiako to remain closely connected to the interests and unfolding stories of each individual child. Learning becomes a shared journey, where tamariki and kaiako explore side by side.
Our kaiako look deeply into the whole child — socially, mentally, spiritually, and physically — observing the subtle cues, questions, and ideas expressed through daily interactions. These insights help us understand the deeper thinking that drives each child’s play. We openly share this with whānau, inviting them to join us in nurturing their child’s interests, strengths, and aspirations. Together, we build a learning environment that is responsive, relational, and beautifully intentional.

Open Ended Learning Opportunities

At Weka, open-ended play empowers tamariki to take the lead, make choices, and explore materials in ways that are unique to them. Without predetermined instructions, children develop their own ideas, methods, and understandings — fostering curiosity, creativity, resilience, and a lifelong love of learning.
Our open-ended resources are intentionally selected and often REAL, recycled, and authentic — brass, stone, wire, shells, wood, natural treasures, and more. These materials invite deep thinking, imaginative exploration, and a strong sense of agency as children create, wonder, and discover in their own meaningful ways.

A Place of Home

Weka is a place where the needs of each child and whānau are honoured with deep respect, attentiveness, and aroha. We take time to truly know our tamariki and their families so we can respond authentically to every moment — the hard days, the joyful days, the celebrations, and the unexpected. These shared experiences shape the heartbeat of our community.
Making time for each other is how we become whānau. We proudly uphold a culture where relationships come first, where every person feels seen, valued, and embraced. For many, Weka becomes a second home — a space rich with warmth, connection, belonging, and the freedom to just be.

Strong Community Links

At Weka, our community is an extension of our learning environment. Each week we venture into nearby parks and reserves, where tamariki can explore the magic of nature — fossicking beneath trees, splashing through puddles, watching insects and birds, and discovering all the elements that make our corner of the world unique. These moments help children understand, appreciate, and connect deeply with the place they call home.
We also nurture a strong culture of giving back. Tamariki are encouraged to recognise the people who support our community and to contribute in meaningful ways — whether through baking to fundraise for our firefighters, creating wellness packs for those in need, or simply offering kindness where it is needed. These experiences guide children to understand that their actions matter and that they can make a positive difference for others.
