Tuatara Lounge

Tuatara Lounge is a vibrant, nature-connected space where our older tamariki are empowered to explore, create, and lead their own learning. The environment encourages independence, curiosity, and deep thinking, offering meaningful challenges that help children understand themselves as capable and confident learners.
Here, tamariki are supported to strengthen key life skills, build strong relationships, and embrace responsibility through daily routines and hands-on experiences — from caring for Papatūānuku during weekly bush adventures to contributing to the rhythms of the lounge. Tuakana–teina relationships flourish, allowing children to guide and support one another with pride.
Grounded in Te Whāriki and woven with our Reggio-inspired philosophy, Tuatara Lounge fosters holistic growth and nurtures children’s readiness for the next steps in their learning journey.

Valuing and Respecting Strengths, Interests and Cultural Diversity of ALL

At Weka, we honour the kete of knowledge tamariki bring into the lounge — listening deeply and valuing their strengths, interests, and cultural identities. We celebrate the diversity within our community and ensure it is meaningfully and naturally interwoven into our environment, relationships, and daily practice. Every child deserves to feel seen, connected, and valued for who they are.
This inclusive culture is strengthened through genuine collaboration with families. We walk alongside whānau as partners, ensuring they are involved in decisions and that their voices, stories, and aspirations shape the learning journey of their precious taonga

Tuatara's Culture

At Weka, our teaching culture is grounded in respect, gratitude, and mindfulness. We invite tamariki to notice, appreciate, and care for the world around them — celebrating the gifts of Papatūānuku and embracing learning within our wider community. Our weekly bush adventures are cherished experiences where children develop courage, curiosity, and a deep sense of connection to te taiao.
We hold enormous gratitude for our families and whānau, who trust us with their precious taonga each day.
Here, play, wonder, and discovery are the heart of children’s work — and we nurture these moments with intention, joy, and respect.

A Communicative & Collaborative Team

At Weka, we are a communicative and collaborative team. We openly share ideas, listen to each other, and honour the contributions of our tamariki. By role-modelling positive, respectful communication, we support children to understand the value of expressing themselves, listening to others, and working together.
We believe that when relationships are harmonious and our goals are unified, we are able to create a nurturing, inspiring, and high-quality learning environment for every child.

Supporting confident and independent children

At Weka, we nurture confident, capable, and independent tamariki by encouraging an “I can” attitude. Children learn through meaningful hands-on experiences, developing the skills, perseverance, and resilience they need to tackle challenges and grow. We celebrate effort as much as success, supporting children to keep trying, problem-solve, and believe in themselves.
The tuakana–teina relationship is a treasured part of our culture. We encourage tamariki to share their strengths, guide others, and learn collaboratively. This fosters leadership, empathy, and a deep sense of belonging within our learning community.

Creating a love for learning

At Weka, our educated and passionate kaiako delight in nurturing a genuine love for learning. We cherish the moments when tamariki show wonder, excitement, and curiosity as they explore and make sense of their world. Their interests, ideas, and smiles guide us, and we listen closely to what their play is telling us.
We believe wholeheartedly in children’s agency — valuing their discoveries, honouring their contributions, and empowering them to lead their own learning journeys. Play is the meaningful work of tamariki, and we follow their lead with respect, joy, and a deep commitment to fostering lifelong learners.

Weaving Te Whariki

Te Whāriki sits at the heart of who we are as a Tuatara whānau. Its strands and principles are woven through our environment, relationships, and daily practice — shaping the way we teach, respond, and honour the uniqueness of every child.
We are guided by this powerful statement from Te Whāriki:
“Competent and confident learners, healthy in mind, body, and spirit, secure in their sense of belonging and in the knowledge that they make a valued contribution to society.”
This vision aligns deeply with our Weka philosophy. It is the image we hold of every Tuatara child, and the foundation on which we build partnerships, learning experiences, and a strong sense of identity and belonging.
